Reflection on the inspiring story of Joseph Anggot: Pinoy college graduate with disability who inspires netizens with his story of determination

" When we possess unwavering determination, we can achieve anything we set our minds to, despite the obstacles we may encounter along the way."

Joseph Anggot has recently proven that nothing can stop someone from reaching his dreams-not even his disability. The 22-year old college graduate posted an inspiring story of his strong will and determination. His post touched the netizens hearts and it became viral. He took up Bachelor of Secondary Education, Major in Mathematics, at the Western Mindanao State University – External Studies in Zamboanga City, Philippines and graduated last April 2 this year. On his recent interview with NFH Fotografia, Anggot described himself ‘as a rock’. “Having disability is not easy. It’s unavoidable to get bullied by my peers. But I didn’t mind it, rather I’m continuously rising up. Just like a rock that people just step on, they don’t know its worth,” he further explained. Despite being hurt from the bullying, Anggot did not lose hope. He also shared an advice on keeping a positive mind set. “My advice to the people with or without disabilities, that is, always have faith and accept [of] what you are. Ignore the negative vibes. Always think positive.” Finishing school was just one of the chapters in his life, and he knows that there are bigger things to come soon. “I am fully ready to face my new chapter of my life. Hoping that [I] can pass the LET [Licensure Exam for Teachers] by God’s will,” he said.

After reading the story of this lad, tears welled up in my eyes as I reflected on the struggles I've faced throughout my life. From elementary school, I endured bullying, which soured my relationship with education. Despite this, I remained determined to pursue my studies and support my family. In high school, I juggled academics with part-time work to help meet our needs. However, life took a harsh turn when my mother fell ill, and we had to relocate to Pampanga for her treatment, forcing me to pause my education for a year. During that time, feelings of hopelessness and uncertainty clouded my mind. I questioned how I would ever complete my studies. Education has always been paramount to me, and I cherished every moment spent in the classroom. Returning to school became my priority. In college, the challenges only intensified. With my father also falling ill, I took on the responsibilities of both a student and a working individual to alleviate the financial strain on my family. As a working student, I faced the dilemma of balancing my studies with my job, often pondering what it would be like to experience the carefree college life others enjoyed. Yet, my sense of duty and responsibility prevailed. I dedicated myself wholeheartedly to my academic pursuits, sacrificing personal enjoyment for the sake of my future. Despite the hardships and moments of doubt, I refused to give up. With each setback, I found the strength to persevere. Through it all, I wore a smile on my face, concealing the weight of my struggles from those around me. Today, as I stand tall, I am reminded of the resilience and determination that have carried me through life's trials. I will graduate, will pass the LPT, and find job for my family. In God's grace.

Reflecting on the stories shared above, it's evident that while we may face challenges in our daily lives and often find ourselves complaining, there are others who endure even greater hardships without losing hope, resilience, or determination.

The two different stories serve as a reminder of a common moral lesson: determination is the key to success. When we possess unwavering determination, we can achieve anything we set our minds to, despite the obstacles we may encounter along the way. As I embark on my journey as a pre-service teacher, particularly in working with learners with special educational needs, I feel honored and privileged that God has chosen me for this profession. With just a few steps left until I don my academic regalia and receive my diploma, I am filled with anticipation. Like the main character we have, Joseph Anggot, who even inspired me to strive better, I eagerly anticipate passing the Licensure Examination for Teachers (LET). I am eager to embrace my role as an educator and assist learners, especially those with disabilities, in realizing their dreams and achieving their fullest potential.
